PHP: a fractal of bad design

I think this pretty much summerises all the thoughts and feelings I've had about PHP over the years. PHP is just painful to work with.

"PHP is a community of amateurs. Very few people designing it, working on it, or writing code in it seem to know what they’re doing. (Oh, dear reader, you are of course a rare exception!) Those who do grow a clue tend to drift away to other platforms, reducing the average competence of the whole. This, right here, is the biggest problem with PHP: it is absolutely the blind leading the blind."

The language might suck, but

The language might suck, but that's a total generalization of the community, but hey what's elitism for anyway. The reason the PHP community still has some great developers is because "It's about the customer, stupid!" tools like Wordpress and other PHP projects solve real business problems and other languages don't have a comparable products. Hence there's still some amazing developers working on them, I'm sorry you haven't had a chance to meet them.

Lets not forget sites like Facebook still run PHP.

It's about the customer, stupid!

I agree that there are some

I agree that there are some very clever and talented people working with PHP and there are some great products around that are written in it. This drupal blog for example ... ;)

I think the point is that there are better languages out there which could be used to produce more robust, flexible and maintainable code. Like the guy said, I could drive a nail in with a rock, but I would end up with blisters before too long.
